Uruguay is set to become a member of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) following its official ratification on June 11, 2024. The country’s accession will take effect on October 4, 2024, marking a significant step toward enhancing its intellectual property (IP) system.
The PCT, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), simplifies the process for securing patents in multiple countries with a single application. By joining the PCT, Uruguayan inventors will gain easier access to global markets, reducing costs and legal complexities. Additionally, foreign investors will find it more appealing to protect their inventions in Uruguay, potentially boosting foreign direct investment.
Uruguay’s accession aligns it with over 155 member countries (158 including UY) and strengthens its position as a competitive player in the global innovation landscape. It also aligns Uruguay with other Latin American nations like Brazil, Chile and Mexico, promoting further collaboration and research in science and technology.
For local innovators, businesses and law firms, Uruguay’s entry into the PCT will offer new opportunities for international patent protection, further stimulating innovation within the country.
